Deansgate Labour Your voice in Manchester City Centre
From Friday 30th August 2019 to Monday 2nd September 2019, climate change protestors from Extinction Rebellion took part in the ‘Northern Rebellion’ which occupied and closed Deansgate during the protests. Their stated aim was to ‘highlight the ecological emergency’ with direct action.
We want to hear from you.
As Councillors, we have heard various opinions from our residents. Some were supportive, engaged with the protests, and appreciated the improved air quality on Deansgate. While others were opposed to the methods and highlighted negative impacts on residents, workers, and businesses.
We’d like to hear more.
We’ve been asked what the Council is doing about Climate Change, air quality, and traffic congestion. Policies on all these issues are being developed, and high on our agenda—particularly after the declaration of a Climate Emergency in July. That is why we want to listen to as many of our residents as possible. The City Centre Transport Strategy is moving forward, and we’ll have more information and a further opportunity to input your views in the near future. We also know that an online petition has gathered momentum to pedestrianise Deansgate permanently, but this petition is open to everyone and we want to listen specifically to our residents on these issues.
